The polar bear can be found in different regions of the Arctic Circle, like the surrounding landmasses James Bay and Newfoundland Island in Canada. Mostly, they are found in James Bay and the adjacent shoreline. Out of the 13 provinces in Canada, Canadian polar bears can be found in 7 of them, for example;
● Northwest Territories
● Newfoundland
● Ontario
● Quebec
● Yukon
● Labrador
● Nunavut, northern Manitoba
A Polar Bears Diet
Polar bears mainly depend on seal fat for survival since they are entirely carnivorous. However, locating a satisfying meal can be quite challenging. During times of scarcity, polar bears may endure several months without food.
Remarkably, a single substantial meal can sustain them for several days; for instance, a 121-pound seal can provide enough energy to fuel a polar bear for eight days. In times of abundance, adult polar bears selectively consume the fat, leaving the remaining carcass for scavengers such as arctic foxes or younger bears.
Nevertheless, polar bears are more relaxed about their food choices. Polar bears' strong sense of smell is their style of finding large animals like whales, narwals, ad walruses. A polar bear can devour approximately 4.4 pounds of fat daily.
Polar bears can settle for small meals like fish, shellfish, eggs, rodents, or even human remains if they can. These traits have brought some conflicts between these large animals and the humans around them.
Population
The current statistics state that the total population of polar bears ranges between 22,000 and 31,000. This is after you have excluded the 300 polar bears which have been captured. However, an article from Reuters has brought disturbing news, revealing a concerning decline of 27% in polar bear numbers in Canada's Western Hudson Bay over five years. As of 2021, the region only sustains a sparse population of 618 polar bears. Alarming projections from experts indicate that unless greenhouse emissions are effectively managed, polar bear populations worldwide could face imminent collapse by the year 2100.
The Plight of Polar Bears
The current impact of climate change is proving to be a menace in the world. The previous four years have witnessed the highest temperatures ever documented.
The Arctic region is currently struggling with the problem as the sea ice is slowly reducing, posing a big stress to the habitat of polar bears.
